Racing: What does the future hold

Speed, money, politics, powerful people and engines—from its beginning at the turn of the century, powerboat racing has careened on a rollercoaster ride of international prominence. Today, the sport continues under the direction of the Union Internationale Motonautique. From its seat in Monaco, the governing body intends to play a significant role in racing’s future.

DePue comes together for one of its most exciting races in years

For nearly three decades DePue, Ill., has been home to the APBA PRO National Race.

This year, however, due to a low water level in Lake DePue, DePue was in jeopardy of losing the race that all of the residents of the tight-knit community have come to love.

“We’re a small town with just over 1,800 people.  We have had these races here with the Men’s Club for 28 straight years.  Before that we had national races that were put on by our Lake Preservation Association,” DePue Mayor Eric Bryant said.

The newly-painted and refinished boat will carry the South Seattle Community College name and logo on its side, as it competes throughout the U.S. and in Qatar during the 2012 racing season.
