History is not what it seems

Thousands of fans left the Bay City River Roar thinking they had witnessed history.

And they were right – even though they didn't see what they thought.

Rob Rinker was first to the finish – was announced as the winner and did a victory lap with the checkered flag – and everybody believed they had seen the start of a new era as the son of racing legend Terry Rinker scored his first win.

But Rinker was penalized one lap for going to the wrong side of the commitment buoy on the opening lap and slipped to fourth place.

And Tim Seebold stepped to the top of the podium for a River Roar record seventh time.

"An old boat racer once told me to take every one you can get," Seebold said. "Because you're going to lose a lot more than you win like that."
