Since the adoption of the renewed World Anti-Doping Code in 2009 the UIM has increased its efforts in contributing to a doping-free sport. Part of these efforts is education.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA, www.wada-ama.org) reviews its list of prohibited substances and methods at least yearly, a new list coming into effect on the 1st of January. Many of the substances on this Prohibited List can be ingredients of commonly used drugs, like drugs for controlling high blood pressure, for treating diabetes, or some even for treating an ordinary cold. That is why it is of utmost importance that drivers at all time should be aware of the existence of such a Prohibited List. Consequently they should ask their doctor or their pharmacist (e.g. in case of over-the-counter drugs), whenever they get medication, to check whether or not the medication contains prohibited substances.
Drivers needing medication that contains prohibited substances, should ask for a Therapeutic Use Exemption, either through the UIM TUE Committee, or through their national anti-doping authority. The form to be used to apply for a TUE can be found attached to this post or through www.uimpowerboating .com – Official Forms & Procedures – Therapeutic Use Exemption template.
Please don't hesitate to ask if there are any questions on these policies.
