The Wildwoods Hydrofest New Jersey Governor’s Cup Regatta scheduled for Oct. 3-4 in Wildwood Crest was canceled Thursday, and race officials said the annual event will no longer take place.

The announcement, made by event coordinator Ann Fitzgerald, came after the Hydrofest Planning Committee determined the reconfiguration of the streets and parks along the Sunset Lake bay area made it no longer feasible to hold the event there. Organizers said the area can no longer accommodate the number of competing race teams, equipment and vendors.

“It was always challenging to begin with to hold the event there because most hydrofests have a park area, and we didn’t,” Fitzgerald said. “We were waiting on the reconstruction, and they’ve made a beautiful park area and bike path, but the streets are thinner, and it makes the staging of the event not feasible. We can’t accomodate the teams and vendors and conduct a safe event.”

Fitzgerald said no one ever complained about the noise, traffic or parking, and that the community embraced the event.
