To me, one of the coolest things about being a freelance journalist is getting to know people I wouldn’t ordinarily meet. Even cooler: Having incredible new experiences as a result of those meetings.
This past spring, my editor at Boating Magazine asked me to cover the first-ever all-female racing team to participate in the 24 Heures Motonautiques Rouen, a prestigious powerboat racing event that is part of the World Long Distance Championship. These women — team captain Marie-Line Hericher of France, Bimba Sjoholm of Sweden, Mette Bjerkaes of Norway and Canadian Tammy Wolf, who is currently based in Illinois — are among the top drivers in the world, and their boats feature some of the most powerful outboard engines in racing.
I interviewed Tammy Wolf before and after the May racing event in France, producing an “On Board With” article for Boating‘s July print edition and a full-length feature for the magazine’s website.
But that wasn’t the end of the story. At least, not for me.....
