BURLEY • After winning the 1-Litre Hydroplanes class at last year’s Idaho Regatta, Jeff Bernard returned this weekend to prove he’s the king of the Snake.

Driving No. 70, owned by Stan Masel of Hoquram, Wash., Bernard beat the 1-Litre Hydro record by 109.5 percent to win the Moyle Mink and Faulkner Memorial Trophy. It is the first time in Regatta history that a Hydro has won this race’s top prize.

The boat’s name is Grumpy, but Masel and Bernard were all smiles Sunday evening as the 38th annual Idaho Regatta wrapped up with an awards ceremony at Morey’s Steakhouse on the banks of the Snake River, where just hours before the fastest boats in the nation went head-to-head.

The Idaho Cup (runner-up to the Mink champion) went to Tom Bandy of Westminster, Calif., who broke the Competition Jets class’ course record by 104.8 percent. Bandy’s performance was a step better than 2012, when he won the Governor’s Cup.
