The Joe Whetstone Memorial Regatta, held last weekend at American Legion Post #223 in Constantine was the first in the Michigan Hydroplane Racing Association’s (MHRA) 2014 Top Gun Series.
The series is sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association.
Categories on the one-mile course included junior classes, stock outboard, 250cc, 350/400 cc and 750cc/850cc mod hydros.
In addition, a MHRA Racer School was held last Friday at the site.
Designed for the newcomer to outboard racing, the school teaches the fundamentals of outboard racing, including basic regatta format and safety rules. Veteran MHRA members conduct classes on starting techniques, racing strategy, fundamentals of planing, and much more. The class is followed by time on the water.
Modern hydroplanes are constructed with a three-point design, meaning three points come in contact with the water.
