He had a Tiger by the tail

MUSCATINE, Iowa — In the early 1960s, Harry Schneider was blazing a new trail in the world of hydroplane racing with his record-holding hydroplane, the Tiger Too.

Today, Schneider, who grew up in Muscatine, has come full circle.

He returned here in 2009 to enjoy his retirement and part of that pleasure stems from recalling the days he and the Tiger Too soared across the water, fetching media attention and landing them both a spot in hydroplane racing history.

A hydroplane is a boat with two or more planing surfaces and a propeller pushes the back of the boat from the water. There is very little drag resistance which allows drivers to reach higher speeds.

“We set a trend in hydroplane racing,” said Schneider, 85.
