CAL-ORE RIVER RACERS TOUR GLIDES IN TO WILLOW CREEK JUNE 10-11TH

(Willow Creek, Ca.) – Kimtu Beach in Willow Creek, California will play host to the Cal-Ore River Racers second race of the summer series with the running of the 2nd Annual ‘Newt Grant (X-15) Memorial’ whitewater race on the pristine Trinity River.  The two-day event begins on Saturday, June 10th with the hydroplane Time Trials beginning at 11am, with a 5pm evening BBQ dinner, Racer benefit Auction-Calcutta, Music, and Boat Show at the VFW Hall.  On Sunday, June 11th at 12pm (noon) will be the main event race along the Trinity River with Hoopa’s Roger Sanderson (#B200) looking to defend his 2016 Championship at Willow Creek.

Sanderson won the season opening CORRA race in Grants Pass, Oregon on Memorial Day capturing his 6th ‘Boatnik’ Title, and becoming the 7th racer to repeat wins on the Rogue River. He won the 2016 High Point Season Championship for the third time in his career.  The field will include hometown favorite, and second year driver, Michael Dickson, (#20) who won the ‘Hard Charger’ award last summer finishing every race on the circuit. However, fate would have it, Dickson failed to finish last weeks ‘Boatnik’ running 4th and, coming up short just one mile from the finish line.   Dickson, finished 4th last year in the inaugural ‘Newt Grant Memorial’ behind 3rd place finisher Justin Hood (#A1), and race runner-up Jesse Reinhart (#17), both of Grants Pass.  Reinhart finished 2nd place at Boatnik last week in a tiebreaker with Sanderson. He was the 2016 Points Championship runner-up, also enroute to winning two races a year ago.

Last week only 6 of the 18 boats finished the season premier, but without injury. Sanderson won 3 of the 4 legs at Boatnik, with Reinhart, Derek Ely (#11), Jeff Lewis (#007), and Jim Eldred (#R35) making up the podium.

The memorial race is named and staged in honor of former Cal-Ore River Racer Newt Grant of Hoopa, California who lost his life in a pre-race mishap 20 years ago in Willow Creek.
