1995 HS Inductees

Don AllenAllen joined APBA racing in Stock B Utility in 1953 and has since raced in all Stock Outboard classes and in many Modified classes. Under Paul Kalb’s tutelage, he became active in APBA administration. He was PRO Chairman of Region 6 (1970) and Trenton Outboard Racing Club Commodore (1971). As Region 6 Chairman for six years, he brought Offshore racing into the Michigan area. He served as APBA secretary (1977-78) and as a Council member (1985-92), representing the Council Members-At-Large on the Executive Committee (1987-92). He also served on the Stock Outboard Commission, was a Modified Outboard Deputy Commissioner and Region 6 OPC chairman. Allen brought his six children into APBA racing; (one won the 1991 JSH Nationals; and continues to bring new members into APBA racing and promote Stock Outboard as a family sport. His professional conduct and consistent, unbiased application of the rules have made him an outstanding referee in almost every category. Don Allen has distinguished himself in power boat racing.
Howard Anderson, Jr.Anderson has been an APBA mainstay both behind the wheel and within the organization for over 45 years.  He began APBA racing in 1950 with a homebuilt B Utility Runabout. He had trouble keeping it right side up, so his first trophy came three years later. Anderson moved into 500, 700 and 1100cc Hydro and 1100cc Runabout classes. A 3-time national champion, his equipment set several records. As owner of Anderson Marine, Inc., in Edmond, WA, he offered space to APBA members and clubs at boat shows across the country to promote boat racing. A lifetime member of the Seattle Outboard Association (SOA), he has supported SOA and APBA with equipment, time and money. A PRO commissioner since 1979, he served as chairman since 1987. Under Howard’s leadership the PRO category maintained its strength and took the tough step of mandating reinforced capsules into three of the fastest PRO classes.
Bedford "Bud" DavieDavie began a long and glorious history in the Alcohol Outboard classes in the 1930s, and a decades-long pursuit of the unlimited Outboard speed record. In 1938 Davie drove a Jacoby step hydro powered by a Draper Class “X” engine at 78.121 mph, taking the “fastest Outboard driver” title from the Europeans.  Davie also introduced something new to Outboarding: the crash helmet! In the mid-1930s, he and a team of American drivers competed in the Spreckels Trophy race in Paris. Davie quit racing after WWII but returned in the late 1970s when Formula 1 tunnel boats rekindled his interest. He owned a two-boat team until the late 1980s. He made two successful runs at the UIM class OZ record: in 1986 the team jumped the kilo record for a single Outboard to 169.531 mph, and two years later, to 176.556 mph — almost 100 mph faster than his 1938 record.
Dan KirtsKirts is from a family of boat racers. His father Mel (PRO Vice President when he died in 1980) and mother Mary were involved in PRO racing. His brothers Tom and Jerry and his son Jim also raced. Kirts started racing at 13, in 1955. As a PRO champion, his accomplishments include 24 APBA national championships, seven NOA championships, three UIM world championships, 16 U.S. Title Series championships and 10 speed records. He was inducted into the Hall of Champions four times and received the Colonel Green Round Hill Trophy twice — all while competing in the 250, 350, 500 and 700cc classes. He also competed in Europe and won the South African OC International Trophy.  Kirts also made Yachting Magazine’s 1970 All-American Racing Team, the 1980 Evinrude 100 MPH Club, the Jack Maypole Memorial Trophy, the Governor’s Cups of Iowa (1983) and Wisconsin (1969). Always available to anyone seeking advice, Kirts was an approved PRO inspector and referee and served on the U.S. Title Series Board of Directors.
